Friends & Family
We had our appt with the pediatric neurosurgeon at OHSU this afternoon to discuss the cyst and schedule the removal of it from her head. The good news is that the Neurosurgeon said IF it is just an arachnoid cyst then it is a fairly simple procedure to cut into her head, drain it, and put a shunt in so it doesn’t grow back. However there is a small possibility it could still be a tumor. The situation really has gone from bad to worse to be quite frank. Mikayla has been diagnosed with having “Horners Syndrome” it is a rare neurological disorder than can cause headaches, tumors & cysts in the brain and /or spine, and strokes. It is usually caused from damage to the carotid arteries is our understanding. The Neurosurgeon says we need to get this resolved quickly and before he can do anything else about the cyst.
The next step now is a massive MRI/MRA to her brain, spine, & neck. She has to be sedated so they need an anesthesiologist for about a 5 hour block of time. She also needs to see a Neuro Ophthalmologist on top of the neurosurgeon we are already seeing. The Neuro Ophthalmologist is the one who will deal with the horners syndrome and how to treat/fix it. We really can’t do anything until we get this MRI & MRA done and the soonest OHSU could do was March 18th which is obviously NOT quickly. We are really praying that St. Vincents can get her in sooner, but we won’t know until tomorrow.
As of right now Mikayla is doing fine and really has no idea what is going on, which is probably for the best. We are still trying to take this all in and praying for quick and smooth resolution to all of this. I know God has purposed all of this as part of His perfect plan but it is not easy and we are really kind of in shock.
